I’ve never been an active person. I’ve never found sports to be fun. As I grew into an adult, I felt the need to go to the gym to stay healthy, but couldn’t bring myself to do it. I hated working out (I say it in past tense because I’ve been pretty good at gyming and I think I’m enjoying it). But the one sport I don’t hate is baseball.
Fans and players of other sports might say that baseball isn’t a sport. Tell that to Jose Bautista. But, it’s not the sport of it that I love so much, it’s the game. It’s the challenge to win; to count the runs and RBIs until the opposing teams shake hands. It’s the focus of each individual player’s skill in their position on the field. It’s watching the batter’s technique at home plate: Their ability to get on base and not sacrifice another player’s game, to take a walk when necessary, to bring in RBIs, to take one base at a time or run all the bases at once, to hit the ball on the green or to hit a home run. It’s the thrill of owning each inning. It’s learning and growing with the team throughout the season and into the finals. It’s the feeling of a supportive team no matter the win-tie-loss ratio of the season.
I have my husband to thank for my love of the game. He brought it out in me. He plays on two men’s leagues, one co-ed league, and multiple tournament teams each season (give or take a few teams). I score keep every week for one of the teams. The players have become part of my circle of friends and family.
I joined my first co-ed league with my husband this year. Being a player of the sport rather than sitting on the bench helped me realize a few things. I don’t like letting myself down or letting others down. I like to experience the game up close and personal, but not so close that I can’t be objective. Therefore, I prefer to watch the game from the bench than play the game myself.
I took my camera with me to one of my husbands games, the one that I score keep. It was difficult to score keep and take creative shots from the bench. But, I managed to snap a few.
I plan on sharing more of my photography on my blog. As I share my photos I’ll share my story for capturing them alongside, just as I have done here. Let me know what you think of my writing or my photos! I love to hear feedback as it helps me improve!
